The Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems is a long-standing document that has been periodically developed over the past 25 years. These guidelines provide up-to-date, evidence-based information to clinicians on available treatments for people, with this latest version commissioned by the Commonwealth of Australia to remain current and integrated with the updated NHMRC consumption guidelines (2020).

The new Guidelines - lead-authored by Professor Haber from the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Medicine and Health - includes new sections about at-risk groups that had not been carefully considered in previous versions. The Guidelines note that although a suite of treatment options are widely available, because of stigma and lack of awareness, treatment is seldom discussed.
