    ONLINE: Zoom Video Conferencing

The AOD and the Brain Virtual Classroom consists of two interactive Zoom workshops. The best learning outcomes will be achieved through completing these sessions in order. Completion of both Zoom workshops of AOD and the Brain is a pre-requisite learning to the Assessing and Managing Withdrawal Virtual Classrooms.

AOD and the Brain provides a basic understanding of how drugs, licit or illicit, travel through the body to exert their impact upon the brain. It will also explore the processes the body employs as a response to maintain safety and remove the substance from the system. It will build knowledge within this area and improve the confidence and ability of the clinician to use the information to enhance client knowledge.  This transfer of knowledge will go towards educating and empowering the client to improve their health outcomes.

The topics covered include:

  •           Knowledge around the classification of psychoactive substances.

  •          A basic understanding of the brain and its structure, how psychoactive drugs influence messaging.

  •          It will provide an overview of process commonly referred to as the reward pathway and how psychoactive drugs influence this system.

  •         An overview of neurotransmission and neurotransmitters.

  •         A basic understanding the differences between pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

The workshop will apply a neurobiological understanding to the processes of intoxication, dependence, tolerance and withdrawal. This will facilitate a basic understanding of the physiological changes that occur during each stage of substance use.

Pre-requisite: AOD and the Brain Part 1 Virtual Classroom

An alternative pre-requisite to Assessing and Managing Withdrawal is the AOD and the Brain e-learning, approximately two hour duration.
