Micro-counselling training involves a blended learning program consisting of three sessions - one self-directed e-Learning module and two interactive Zoom workshops. We recommend participants complete the e-Learning module in the week prior to the first workshop. This should take approximately one hour. The Zoom workshops build on the topics covered in the introductory e-Learning module and offer opportunities for further application and practice. Each workshop runs for 2.5 hours. The best learning outcomes will be achieved through completing these sessions in order.
These workshops explore the essential skills and strategies that go towards forming and maintaining a therapeutic engagement which enables growth, insight, cognitive organisation and change. Micro-counselling skills are transtheoretical by nature and can be applied in virtually all approaches and models of assessment and counselling in the alcohol and other drug field – either face-to-face or remote. An aim of these sessions if to also help workers to also consider the use of micro-counselling skills within the context of their own natural style.
Part I and II topics covered include:
Applying ethics and multicultural competence as a necessary base for counselling practice.
Improving the critical skills for developing the behaviours which foster a strong alliance in counselling.
Understanding and practicing the basic listening sequence to enable empathic listening and robust assessment.
Pre-requisite: Micro-counselling eLearning.
Prior to signing up to attend it is expected that you will ensure you are able to access a computer with an internet connection that will allow streaming of video.
