Motivational interviewing training involves a blended learning program consisting of 4 self-directed e-Learning modules (approx. three hours), two full-day interactive workshops and a one hour follow up zoom call. Participants are recommended to complete the e-Learning modules in the week prior to their scheduled workshop. The best learning outcomes will be achieved through completing these sessions in order.
The workshop builds on the topics covered in the introductory e-Learning modules and offers opportunities for further application and practice. Topics covered in the interactive workshops include:
Day 1: The Spirit of MI and Change Talk
Day 1 will cover the underlying spirit of MI, along with the core skills which are used In other forms of counselling and across the four processes of MI. The focus will also be on change talk, with time spent on the different subtypes of change talk to help participants better recognise and respond to change talk.
Day 2: Evoking Change Talk and Planning and Consolidating Commitment
Day 2 will focus on how to evoke change talk, the heart of MI, and demonstrate how to use the core skills to respond to sustain talk and what to do if there is discord. The final part of the workshop will look at the four processes of MI and how to recognise which stage a client may be at to inform your approach, including the final process of developing a change plan and then consolidating commitment.
Follow-up Zoom call – this will be scheduled in the weeks following the training and participants will be advised of the date and time during the workshop. Reminders will also be sent. It will be an opportunity to reflect on implementation of key learnings and skills from the workshop with fellow participants and Insight educators
Facilitators: Michelle Taylor and James Hoey
