Culturally Safe AOD Practice - Part 2 is the second of a two-part workshop, with Part 1 on Thursday 13 October. Registration to Part 1 is available separately here. 

Over the 2-part Virtual Classroom, this workshop focuses on enhancing worker’s culturally safe alcohol and drug practice when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their families and communities. 

By the end of the two-part workshop learners will be able to: 

  • Understand the impact of history on the present-day wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their families and communities in the context of alcohol and other drug use. 
  • Describe key concepts of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health including social and emotional wellbeing.
  • Understand the prevalence and rates of substance use amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. 
  • Demonstrate mindful engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families and communities in regards to cultural protocols, the importance of building rapport and connection and family and child inclusive practice.
  • Identify available culturally-safe AOD screening, assessment and intervention tools including online and eHealth apps.
  • Understand how to build and/or enhance organisational and workplace cultural safety.

To attend the virtual classroom please ensure:

  • Your device has reliable internet to stream video and audio
  • Your camera is able to remain on for the full duration of the workshop (except during designated breaks or as advised by the facilitator) and you have a microphone to enable you to engage in activities and discussions;
  • You have access to the participant workbook (either electronically on a second screen, or a printed copy);
  • You are in a quiet, appropriate space with minimal distractions;
  • You are logged in on an individual device (do not join workshop as a group with other registered or non-registered participants).
