MODULE NAME:Maternal health: Alcohol and other drugs
MODULE CODE:U0.3-4
COURSE NAME:BRIEF INTERVENTIONS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
LEARNING LEVEL:Training for Non AOD/MH workers
TARGET AUDIENCE:It is recommended for workers in all healthcare and community service settings - including those employed in statutory and welfare contexts - where smoking, alcohol and drug use, and physical and oral health may be an issue, but may not necessarily be the primary or sole focus of your role.
NB: Workers employed within specialist alcohol and drug and mental health settings are advised to skip this module and progress to the "Screening and Brief Intervention" package located under "AOD Core Skills" on the main eLearning page where the theory and practice of brief interventions are explored in greater detail.
MODULE TYPE:Elective
MODULE AIM:In our work with women, our assessment of their health is not complete if we don’t ask about alcohol and drug use. This eLearning will help you to identify the issues of alcohol and drug use for women, and apply brief intervention skills to Ask, Advise and Help to support them to improve their health. It is recommended that you complete the “Introduction to Brief Interventions for a Healthy Lifestyle” eLearning to give you a foundational knowledge of the skills applied in this module.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this module, leaners will be able to:

  • understand the effects of alcohol and drug use across preconception, pregnancy and postnatal stages for women and their children
  • apply brief interventions (3-step model) to support women and families to change their substance use behaviours to improve health outcomes
  • describe child and family safety considerations in maternal use of alcohol and other drugs
  • list resources and further learning to support the use of brief interventions.
LENGTH:1 hour
CPD:This module may contribute towards CPD. A Statement of Completion will be issued on completion of this module.
