This module provides a broad overview of the foundational concepts that are used when working with people who use psychoactive substances.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Utilise best practice AOD language and terminology, including slang and common acronyms.
  • Describe psychoactive substances and differentiate the three main drug classification types.
  • Describe why people use substances, including patterns of use
  • Describe key theoretical models such as 'drug, set and setting' and the Stages of Change
  • Describe the policy and practice of harm minimisation.
