The aim of this module is to explain what trauma is, how it affects people and the links with substance use. It will increase knowledge and awareness of trauma which is the first step on your journey to becoming a trauma-informed worker.
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- Explain why it is important to become trauma informed.
- Describe the concept of post-traumatic stress, the different types of traumatic responses and the impacts of complex trauma.
- Understand the links between trauma and substance use.
- Recognise Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their effects.
- Name the five principles of trauma informed care and state associated strategies related to alcohol and other drug (AOD) practice.
- Outline the meaning of vicarious and secondary trauma.
- Identify some of the considerations for people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and for people of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds.
