Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counselling method that seeks to enhance a client’s motivation to change by helping them to explore and resolve ambivalence. This module is the first in a 4-part series of eLearning modules focusing on MI. It contains an overview of the 'spirit' of MI and some of the core skills and techniques it entails.
By the end of this module, learners will be able to:
- understand the elements that make up the spirit of MI: partnership, acceptance, compassion and evocation.
- understand how to show empathy through the use of reflections.
- build knowledge of the core interviewing skills of MI: open questions, affirmations, reflections, and summaries.
- describe the benefits of using MI compared to other more directive counselling approaches.
