MODULE AIM:This course will build your skills in observing and recording information for a Mental State Examination (MSE) and is designed for practitioners working in mental health, alcohol and other drugs services. The content focuses on the foundations of a mental state examination and steps participants through identifying and gathering relevant information for each component of the MSE. On completion of this course, it is anticipated that you will be able to define and outline the structure of the core components of an MSE, accurately document what you observe in an MSE including the use of terminology, and identify and differentiate signs and symptoms within the various components of an MSE. Interactive learning activities provide you with opportunities to practice your observation and documentation skills. This course was initially produced through collaboration between the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Learning (Learning Centre) and the New South Wales Institute of Psychiatry (NSWIOP) but has recently been updated by Learning Centre clinical educators to incorporate the latest research and improve consistency in mental state examination assessments. We hope this six (6) hour training course will enhance your clinical skills and benefit yourself, your service and your consumers.
