MODULE AIM:

This is module 1 of our 'Fundamentals of Suicidality' eLearning course.  The overarching aim of the course is to provide an access point for workers to understand foundational concepts associated with suicidal ideation, intent, and behaviours; and resources to support workers who interact with people who experience (or are on a pathway towards experiencing) suicidality.

This course is made up of four modules, and it is recommended that you complete each one in order:

  • L2.9 1/4 Understanding suicidality.
  • L2.9 2/4 Communicating about suicidality.
  • L2.9 3/4 Supporting long-term reduction in suicidality.
  • L2.9 4/4 Addressing short-term safety in suicidality.

This module introduces workers to the Integrated Motivational-Volitional Model of Suicidal Behaviour (IMV model), which outlines a pathway for developing suicide risk, from vulnerability factors to the enactment of suicidal behaviours.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • describe the IMV model
  • apply the IMV model to a clinical scenario to enhance understanding of the person's experience of suicidality (if any)
  • develop a planned approach to observations and interview questions designed to gather information relevant to the IMV model.
LENGTH:30 minutes
CPD:Participation in this activity may contribute to CPD. A Statement of Completion will be issued on completion of this module.
