MODULE AIM:

This is module 4 of our 'Fundamentals of Suicidality' eLearning course. The overarching aim of the course is to provide an access point for workers to understand foundational concepts associated with suicidal ideation, intent, and behaviours; and resources to support workers who interact with people who experience (or are on a pathway towards experiencing) suicidality.

This course is made up of four modules, and it is recommended that you complete each one in order:

  • L2.9 1/4 Understanding suicidality.
  • L2.9 2/4 Communicating about suicidality.
  • L2.9 3/4 Supporting long-term reduction in suicidality.
  • L2.9 4/4 Addressing short-term safety in suicidality.

This module discusses how use a safety plan and lethal means counselling principles to enhance a person’s short-term safety by reducing the likelihood of them attempting suicide during a period of acute suicidality.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this module, learners will be able to: 

  • use the IMV model to create goals designed to reduce suicidality long-term
  • describe general principles of intervention that should be embodied when working with a person on their suicidality
  • conceptualise and address substance use in the context of approaches to addressing suicidality long-term.

CPD:Participation in this activity may contribute to CPD. A Statement of Completion will be issued on completion of this module.
