Taken “with a pinch of salt”: Delivering a message that alcohol causes cancer

by Insight

Alcohol is a known modifiable risk factor for breast cancer. Our research shows women do not necessarily know about the alcohol-breast cancer link or perceive risk messages to be trustworthy, or relevant. Social class impacts women’s preferred formats for risk messages (how women want messages delivered) and their perceptions of the trustworthiness of information sources (who women trust to deliver messages). This presentation will provide evidence-based guidance for alcohol risk message delivery that might increase equity in breast cancer prevention.

Dr Belinda Lunnay is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Research Centre for Public Health, Equity and Human Flourishing, Torrens University Australia. She has qualifications in health promotion and public health sociology. Her expertise is in understanding how structural disadvantages impact health outcomes with a particular focus on social class. She is currently working with Professor Paul Ward on an Australian Research Council funded study on social class disparities in women’s alcohol consumption behaviour, perceptions of alcohol-related breast cancer risk and trust in risk messages.
