TARGET AUDIENCE:All prescribers and dispensers.
MODULE TYPE:Elective
MODULE AIM:The aim of this module is to equip prescribers and dispensers with a greater knowledge and awareness of the complexities and challenges in prescribing or dispensing opioid medicines to new or inherited patients as well as practical strategies that can be implemented in everyday practice.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:

  • Differentiate between pain classifications, with a particular focus on the prevalence and causes of lower back pain.
  • Identify core components of a comprehensive psycho-social-biomedical assessment for opioid therapies.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of initiating a monitored medicine.
  • Differentiate the use of opioids in the treatment of acute pain compared to persistent pain.
  • Identify and manage predictive behaviours for problematic opioid use.
  • Identify and apply safe practice recommendations when supporting an inherited patient.
LENGTH:2 hours
CPD:

This module is accredited for:

  • 1.5 hours of Educational Activities and 0.5 hours of Reviewing Performance with RACGP;
  • 2.0 hours of CPD with ACRRM; and
  • 2 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 2 CPD credits) suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan which can be converted to 2 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 4 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities with APC.
